The government funded review of cannabis research revealed that THC may be more effective in relieving chronic pain than CBD. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded the review published in Annals of Internal Medicine. It found that while cannabinoids are generally effective for managing chronic pain, those with higher THC to CBD ratios may be more potent than those with higher CBD to THC ratios. One of the main active ingredients in marijuana is CBD. According to Harvard Health Publishing, CBD doesn’t usually cause a high, and the World Health Organization has said that it doesn’t have any effects that could lead to abuse or dependence.
On the other hand, THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the component of marijuana that induces most of its psychoactive effects and gives users a “high” feeling. According to Live Science, the compound can cause relaxation and sedation but also causes impairment of motor skills and memory recall problems. Researchers reviewed 25 studies to determine the THC/CBD ratios of the products. The review found that products with a higher THC to CBD ratio are associated with side effects such as dizziness or sedation. There was not enough evidence to draw any conclusions about products with low THC to CBD ratios. Further research is required to understand the long-term effects of cannabis use.
